How many brands are you familiar with?
There are loads of them . . . . I’ll be a bit predictable here and point out the obvious ones . . . .Apple . . . . Lego . . . Xbox . . Nike. . .
. . .but think as well about a local smaller business that you are familiar with . . . . And when you picture them in your head what do you see?
A: Their company name written in Comic Sans? . . . or
B: A bright colourful logo . . . or a picture of their identity.
If a picture paints a thousand words . . . . your logo is the picture of your business . . . . .which is why you need a logo. . . .
Logos are just part of everyday life . . . . and that’s how you should want your business identity to become.
Boots, Marmite, Guinness . . . . all these companies have an original brand identity . . . . . that emblem that shouts here I am . . . .
You need a logo because all the great companies out there have one . . . . isn’t your business just as good as M&S . . . .
. . . at the risk of being topical with today’s current news (June 7th 2016) surely your business has as much integrity as Sports Direct? . . . .
Think about any local businesses around you . . . . . when you see a van all sign written and wrapped. . . . . maybe a local plumber, a gardener, a tradesman.
You see a their vehicle, or their banner, their shop sign, their pavement sign . . . and you recognise their logo. . .
. . . and with that recognition comes the reminder of what they do. . . who they are. . . what you heard your friend say about how good they were.
You need a logo because the colours . . . . the layout of the design . . . . . the imagery . . . . . the typeface . . . . have the power to catch people’s imagination . . .
You need a logo because a powerful logo makes people want to look at it . . . . . their brain soaks it up . . . . . it’s attractive and it’s memorable.
Then when somebody enquires about a local plumber, a gardener, a tradesman . . . . . that powerful attractive logo is recalled . . . . and with it a potential business enquiry.
Still not sure that You need a logo
The thing to ask yourself is . . .
Without a logo how are you going to visualise your business identity?
What are you going to put on your business cards?
What icon are you going to use on your social media pages?
What emblem are your going to put on your invoices / quotations / marketing flyer / email newsletter?
How are you going to make your business look different and look better. . . .look more professional than the rest?
Without a logo . . . how do you capture peoples imagination?
What lasting original image do they have to remember you by?
You need a logo when your business is a start-up
When you first start a business there are always going to be start-up costs and there are always going to be reasons in your head why you think you don’t need it.
A briefing chat with a designer is usually free, just to help you get some ideas.
There is loads of grant funding help for business start-ups.
AND Wild Ideas offers interest free payment terms.
but you need a logo for you . . . . . it’s your brand . . . . it’s your whole image . . . . . your ethos . . . . your business identity.
You need a logo so that you have an identity than can become reknown in your area, be that your genre or geographical area.
You need a logo designed by a professional . . . . . if you rush through it with a dodgy DIY approach it’s just not going to work.
You need a logo that is right . . . . take the time get yourself looking exactly how you need to look right from the start.
You need a logo to represent your business for many years . . . . creating a lasting impression and building a subconscious recognition in peoples minds.
You need a logo to be your identity that people become so familiar with . . . . that they associate it with all the great things about your business genre.
You need a logo to have so much power that it eats into their subconsciousness that they don’t even realise why they chose you . . . it’s just second nature to them.
You need a logo because it makes you look professional and presentable.
You need a logo because it adds credibility to your business which will drive better client responses.
You need a logo because. . . you want people to recognise who you are and what you do with a unique badge that makes you stand out.
You need a logo because it shows that you are proud of your business and want to give it an identity.
You need a logo because it says here I am look at what I can do . . . . it tells everybody about you.
You need a logo because it makes you and your business look important and serious.
You need a logo because it represents your knowledge, skill and credibility that you know what you’re talking about.
There are just so many reasons why You need a logo.
But You need a logo that is good – FONTS
The thing about doing it yourself and rushing is that so many people just wright their business name in a standard typeface.
This is not a logo – not really.
Typing your business name in Comic sans is not a logo . . . It is your business name typed in comic sans!
You need a logo that shows a bit of originality and creativity.
You need a logo that stands out from the crowd and gives you credibility.
At least spend a bit of time choosing a font that is a bit more unique than anything from the windows system . . . .
(besides which you could encounter copyright issues with these fonts when you wan to use them in online marketing for brand consistency)
Read my blog about how and why you should be using Google Fonts
A designer will think about your business . . . . will search through hundreds of typefaces will find something that’s just got that edge . . something that just isn’t a standard font.
and then your business name could be laid out different weights, . . . . different colours . . . . not all the letters the same size . . . . . not necessarily all the letters the same colour . . . . . . not necessarily just your name in that same font . . . . .
. . . . One line lower case . . . .1 line upper case . . . (maybe) . . . . just something that makes it unique and a different way of creating a unique layout . . . . .
. . . . . the word in on a curve . . . . . or maybe a letter bastardised (correct term) to look like something else . . . .
. the flick on a G repeated to make it look like dog ears. Read my blog on the Doggy Digz design story.
. . . . You need a logo that with that original twist to make it completely special to you so that it grabs attention and gets you noticed right from the start.
But You need a logo that is good – IMAGE
Ideally too you should aim to create an emblem or stand alone icon that works with and without your font as this can open up more flexibility and extra benefits.
Go back to the Apple . . . Nike . . . Xbox examples. . . .
. . . All of these have an emblem they can use without any wording that beautifully portrays their brand . . . simple striking and unique. . . .
. . .this means that the icon can go big or small without the need for readability of the wording . . . it becomes multi lingual . . .without barriers.
If you can achieve this with your logo design then this opens up your options further for brand recognition.
Read my blog on how to create an awesome logo design.
