The blog is a little late this week because I was waiting to see the outcome of a networking event I went to yesterday . . . . .
. . . where I was recruiting new team members . . . .
Without the right team members
Almost 5 years ago we moved house and – due to the state of the housing market at the time – ended up renting out our previous property. . .
. . . fortunately, we have a lovely tenant who is been very good at dealing with any issues . . .
. . . . but this week he had a problem with the gas cooker and was asking me if I knew of any gas fitters who may be able to come and have a look at it.
Unfortunately, there was no one I could recommend, who lives locally to him, and so I reverted to the gas safe register online and forward him the link of the page of the local gas engineers.
. . . . as it turns out he was about to look through this when his teenage son said . . .
“Oh Dad I’ve just driven past a gas fitter’s van parked down the road” . . . .
. . . . and so my tenant, in preference to staying in the nice warm house and merely picking up his phone to contact a local fitter . . . . .
. . . . chose to go out in the cold to get in his car and drive half a mile down the road and actually knock on a door . . . . .
. . . . to speak to the gas fitter who was working at another property to ask him if he was able to come and look at the aforementioned cooker!
. . . . so what does that tell you about our behaviours and preferences, when speaking to strangers?
. . . . it shows that we would rather speak to someone face-to-face than speak to a complete stranger on the telephone.
. . . which is why it is so so important to take any opportunity to physically go and talk to new people . . . .
. . . which is exactly what I did yesterday.
How to recruit new team members
I have always had the most success in getting new clients and team members when I have gone to these type of events . . . .
. . . . . where I have chatted with people and spent a bit of time getting to know them a little bit.
The organiser of the free event Matthew Clayton from build A UK business had said that there were not many people registered to attend yesterday and maybe it would not be so beneficial to me . . . .
. . . . but after I had been unable to attend the Birmingham event last week I was quite keen not to skip this day.
. . . . and in the end I did in fact struggle to speak to everybody in the room in the 4 and a half hours that I was there.
Working on the theory that quality not quantity has been my best route to success . . . .
. . . . and the thing to focus on is that even chatting to just one person could be all it takes to establish an important link that new contact.
Each and every one of us has something to give, we are all unique and our opinions, views and experiences can have a profound effect on someone else . . .
. . . . so we should always take the time and trouble to listen and engage with other people . . .
. . . . and be open to anything that they may be able to share.
You never know how much it might have an effect on your life . . . . your business and how you change the way forwards from that moment because of something they said.
In fact I picked up some very insightful advice, as well as meeting a potential new client . . . .
. . .and of course recruiting all of these people to be my latest team members.
I will give them the opportunity to remember me, by regularly keeping in touch with them via this blog . . .
and then when anyone asks them . . .do you know a graphic or web designer . . . they can pass on my name.
By meeting potential team members face-to-face then you forge a better memory of them . . . .establish a stronger connection. . . .
. . . and every one of these team members is another link to a customer for you or them . . .
. . . because even if THEY don’t want your services . . . . they may know someone who does. . . . or the people they know may know someone who does.
. . . and remember my tenant . . . who did not want to phone a stranger? . . . well with a recommendation from one of your team members you are no longer a stranger . . .
. . . so you’re more likely to get that call.
. . . .so get recruiting . . . say hello . . . . collect their contact info . . . . add them to your list and keep in touch. . . .
. . . connect on social media and say hi every now and then . . . .
“I’m still here”. . . . “this is what I’ve been up to” . . . “can you recommend anybody?”
and well as . . . . “what have you been doing?”
because in the same way when someone you value suddenly asks you out of the blue . . . . .
do you know someone who can . . . . .?
then it’s always going to be better for you if you can say actually yes I do.
so get out there go and recruit some team members of your own . . . . smile, be friendly, confidence and chat to everybody . . . .
and make sure you do lots of listening in return.
